The local theatre and its origins

Prior to the local theatre being built, the Hôtel-Dieu cemetery stood on the site, before it was moved in 1758 when work began on filling in the dykes surrounding the city. In 1838, Théodore Tarbé stated that he "was to the west of the spot where the auditorium is now", but this auditorium is not the same one as in our current theatre.

The auditorium mentioned by Tarbé was in the west wing of the edifice, which was built at the end of the 18th century using materials produced by the demolition of the archbishops’ chateau in Noslon (this wing is currently home to the Brasserie du Théâtre).
As Étienne Dodet pointed out in his study on "The origins of the local theatre", it appears that in 1808 the first show took place in this building, which was acquired by the town council in1827. Among the audience regularly attending shows performed in this auditorium was Stéphane Mallarmé, who wrote the theatre column in the Sénonais newspaper from the end of 1861 to the start of 1862.

1882: a new theatre
In 1879, it was decided to build a new theatre. The first stone was laid in 1881, and on 16 July 1882 the work of the architect Lefort was inaugurated with artists from the French National Academy of Music and the Comédie française.
A guide published in 1897 described it as follows: "The theatre is an elegant and modern building used by travelling theatre troupes. The auditorium is pretty and well arranged. The stage is very spacious for an auditorium of this modest size. "
Towards the end of the 1960s, the theatre played host to theatrical tours, concerts by local societies and secondary school prize-giving ceremonies, etc. However, it no longer met new safety standards and was closed in 1969.

1981: birth of the local theatre in Sens (TMS)
Threatened with closure, the theatre was registered in the supplementary list of historical monuments in 1975, and in 1979 renovation work was agreed by the mayor, André Chaussat, and the town council. On 20 November 1981, the curtain was raised once again. The local press wrote: "The local theatre in Sens (known by its acronym TMS), will start a new lease of life after a twelve-year long period of deep lethargy, during which time the place was almost demolished to make way for the Bank of France, then a bus station".
