In order to prevent any further conflict after the second World War, the idea of twinning towns together and establishing links between the various countries which had been at war was adopted. The thinking behind it is that by getting to know one another better, sharing customs, immersing ourselves in the way of life and culture of a country we bring about exchanges and foster links. This was what happened, and you may have noticed that nowadays French towns are mainly twinned with German districts. The twinning system project then spread to other surrounding countries (Great Britain, Spain, Italy and Belgium, etc.), and even to other continents such as Africa.
Twinning in Sens
The idea was invented in 1959, forming a link with a town a similar size to Sens.
This was the start of the twinning with the German town of
Lörrach in 1966. Then followed
Senigallia in 1981 and
Chester in 1994. Cultural, educational and economic exchanges are always taking place. The originality of Sens is marked by a quadruple twinning: All towns are now twinned together.
Links have also been forged with the Eastern European countries……
Vychgorod in the Ukraine.
