With the Archbishop's Palace, Sens Cathedral is the only remaining witness to a glorious past, summarised in its title of “Metropolitan and Primatial Cathedral Church”.
The earliest of the major Gothic cathedrals, its influence radiated throughout Christendom,
|
|
from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to Canterbury Cathedral via the cathedrals of Nicosia and Geneva.
It is a showcase for tracing the changes in Gothic art from its beginnings until its final blaze of glory.
As a royal fief, it was frequently the setting for events that intertwined the history of Sens with the history of France.
Victor Hugo wrote : "It is art complicated by history, it is the religion of the soul powerfully combined with the philosophy of deeds."
