With the Archbishop's Palace, Sens Cathedral is the only remaining witness to a glorious past, summarised in its title of “Metropolitan and Primatial Cathedral Church”.

The earliest of the major Gothic cathedrals, its influence radiated throughout Christendom,
from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to Canterbury Cathedral via the cathedrals of Nicosia and Geneva. It is a showcase for tracing the changes in Gothic art from its beginnings until its final blaze of glory.
As a royal fief, it was frequently the setting for events that intertwined the history of Sens with the history of France.

Victor Hugo wrote : "It is art complicated by history, it is the religion of the soul powerfully combined with the philosophy of deeds."
